Description

Indications:

Clonazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine prescribed for the treatment of seizure disorders, including epilepsy and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. It is also indicated for panic disorder and acute episodes of anxiety. Off-label, it may be used for sleep disturbances and certain movement disorders.

Mechanism of Action:

Clonazepam binds to the GABAA receptor complex at the interface of the α and γ subunits. This enhances the effect of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA by increasing the frequency of chloride ion channel openings. The resulting hyperpolarisation of neuronal membranes reduces the excitability of nerve cells, helping to control seizures and anxiety symptoms.
