Description
Indications:
Nitrazepam is primarily prescribed for short-term relief of severe insomnia, helping individuals fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and reduce night-time awakenings. In paediatrics, it is also used to manage myoclonic seizures in children.
Mechanism of Action:
Nitrazepam enhances the function of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the brain’s primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. By binding to GABA-A receptors, it prolongs chloride channel opening, leading to neuronal hyperpolarisation. This action promotes relaxation, sedation, and seizure control. Additionally, its anticonvulsant effects are linked to its interaction with voltage-gated sodium channels, slowing neuronal excitation.
